Execute Token (Obsolete)
Audience:
Low-code EngineersSkill Prerequisites:
Actions,Tokens
Replaces the tokens in an expression and, optionally, saves the result in a token. It was mainly used to run tokens that do something when they're evaluated, such as tokens that generate or save data.
This action is obsolete. Use Create/Update Tokens instead. Existing Execute Token actions still work, but new applications shouldn't use it. See Migrating to Create/Update Tokens.
Typical Use Cases
- Understand or maintain an existing application that already uses it
- Migrate an existing action to Create/Update Tokens
Don't use it to
- Build anything new. Use Create/Update Tokens, which can set several tokens in one action and can replace tokens more than once.
- Evaluate expressions that come from users. Tokens can read data users shouldn't see, for example
[User:Email(UserId=1)].
Related Actions
| Action Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Create/Update Tokens | The replacement. Sets one or more tokens from expressions. |
| Run SQL Query | Runs SQL and saves the result in tokens. |
Input Parameter Reference
| Parameter | Description | Supports Tokens | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Token Expression | The expression to evaluate, for example [DoMath:Eval(expression=[Price]*[Quantity])]. Tokens are replaced once. | Yes | empty string | No |
Output Parameters Reference
| Parameter | Description |
|---|---|
| Output Token Name | The name of the token that receives the result, for example Total. Square brackets and spaces around the name are removed, so [Total] also works. If it's empty, the expression is still evaluated, but the result isn't saved. |
Considerations
- Tokens are replaced once. If the result contains more tokens, they stay as they are. Create/Update Tokens has a Number of Recursions setting for that.
- The output name doesn't support tokens. It's used as typed.
- Security. Only evaluate expressions your application controls. Don't pass in text that users typed.
Migrating to Create/Update Tokens
Replace each Execute Token action with a Create/Update Tokens action:
| Execute Token | Create/Update Tokens |
|---|---|
| Token Expression | Token Value of a row in Tokens |
| Output Token Name | Token Name of the same row |
| (tokens replaced once) | Number of Recursions set to 1 (the default) |
Create/Update Tokens requires a Token Name. If the old action had an empty Output Token Name and was only used to run a token, give the row any name you won't use, for example Ignored.
If you have several Execute Token actions in a row, you can merge them into one Create/Update Tokens action with one row each. Rows run in order, so a row can use a token set by a row above it.
Examples
To understand how to use the below examples, please see Running Examples.
1. Calculate an order total (obsolete)
This action multiplies the Price and Quantity tokens and saves the result in [Total].
{
"Title": "Execute Token (Obsolete)",
"ActionType": "ExecuteToken",
"Description": "Calculate the order total",
"Parameters": {
"Token": "[DoMath:Eval(expression=[Price]*[Quantity])]",
"OutputTokenName": "Total"
}
}
2. The same action with Create/Update Tokens
This is the recommended replacement for example 1. It gives the same result in [Total].
{
"Title": "Create/Update Tokens",
"ActionType": "ApplyTokens",
"Description": "Calculate the order total",
"Parameters": {
"Tokens": [
{
"name": "Total",
"value": "[DoMath:Eval(expression=[Price]*[Quantity])]"
}
],
"RecursionCount": "1"
}
}
