Datasource Edit

Audience: Low-code Engineers

Skill Prerequisites: Listings

Takes the user to the page where a listing item is edited. The page is the Edit Url set in the listing's data source settings, filled in with the item's values. It opens in the same browser tab or in a popup over the listing.

It's used on item buttons. It's also what the Edit Item special button uses.

Typical Use Cases

  • Add an Edit button to each row that opens the record's edit form
  • Open the edit form in a popup, so users stay on the listing page

Don't use it to

Action NameDescription
Datasource ViewOpens the data source's View Url for a listing item.
Datasource AddOpens the data source's Add Url.
Datasource DeleteDeletes a listing item from the data source.
Datasource Inline EditEdits rows inside the listing.

Input Parameter Reference

Open in PopupOpens the edit page in a popup over the listing instead of in the same tab. The page is loaded in an iframe, so it should look good without the site's header and menu.NoOffNo
Popup TitleThe title shown at the top of the popup, for example Edit [Name]. Only used when Open in Popup is on.Yesempty stringNo

Where the URL comes from

Set the URL in the listing's data source settings, in the Edit Url field. It's available on the Database Table, SQL Advanced Query and SQL Select data sources. See Listings Datasources.

  • The URL can contain tokens for the item's fields, for example /products/edit?id=[Id].
  • A returnurl query string parameter with the listing page's URL is added automatically. The edit page can use it to send the user back.
  • With the obsolete Action Form data source, the URL is the form's page, opened for that entry.

The action reloads the item from the data source using its ID. It shows an error when:

ErrorCause
Entry does not existThe item wasn't found, for example because it was deleted.
No edit url definedThe data source has no Edit Url, or doesn't support one.
Data source is not configuredThe listing has no data source.

Considerations

  • Final action. The action returns a result to the browser, so actions after it in the same list don't run.
  • Needs an item. Use it on item buttons. On a root button's Actions list there's no item. In a Per Item Actions list, the browser ignores the result, so nothing opens.
  • The listing isn't refreshed when a popup closes. Closing the popup only hides it. The obsolete Action Form data source is the exception: submitting the form closes the popup and refreshes the listings on the page.
  • Listings only. Use it in listings. The User Guides module lists an action with the same name, but 1.28 has no implementation for it there.

Examples

tip

To understand how to use the below examples, please see Running Examples.

1. Edit a product in a popup

This action opens the data source's Edit Url for the clicked row in a popup. The title includes the product's Name field.

{
"Title": "Datasource Edit",
"ActionType": "DataSource.Edit",
"Description": "Edit the product in a popup",
"Parameters": {
"OpenInPopup": true,
"PopupTitle": "Edit [Name]"
}
}

2. Edit only open orders

This action goes to the edit page in the same tab, but only when the row's Status field is Open.

{
"Title": "Datasource Edit",
"ActionType": "DataSource.Edit",
"Description": "Edit open orders",
"Condition": "[Status] == \"Open\"",
"Parameters": {
"OpenInPopup": false
}
}
