Update Form Data (AJAX)
Audience:
Low-code EngineersSkill Prerequisites:
Actions,Forms,Tokens
Sends the form's current data back to the browser and refreshes the form fields with it, without reloading the page. Use it after actions that change field values on the server, so the user sees the new values right away.
It ends the current run. No actions after it run.
This action is only available in Forms.
How it works
- Earlier actions change values. Any token with the same name as a form field becomes that field's new value. For example, a Create/Update Tokens row named
FullNamesets theFullNamefield. - Update Form Data (AJAX) stops the actions and sends all the form's field values to the browser.
- The browser reloads the form with those values. The page itself isn't reloaded, and the user stays on the form.
Typical Use Cases
- Fill in fields from a database lookup when the user clicks a button, for example load a customer's address from their customer number
- Calculate values on the server, such as a total or a generated code, and show them in the form
- Clear or reset fields after a button's actions without reloading the page
Don't use it to
- Calculate values that only depend on other fields. A field's bind expression updates it in the browser without calling the server.
- Show a message to the user. Use Display Message.
- Run more actions afterwards. Nothing after this action runs.
Related Actions
| Action Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Create/Update Tokens | Sets tokens, including tokens named like form fields. |
| Run SQL Query | Reads data into tokens that can fill form fields. |
| Display Message | Shows a message and ends execution. |
Input Parameter Reference
This action has no parameters. Use the action's Condition to control when it runs. See Common Parameters.
Considerations
- Final action. It ends the current run. Put it last, after the actions that set the values.
- Use it in button actions. It's designed to answer a button click.
- The whole form is refreshed. All fields are sent back, not only the ones that changed. Values the user typed are kept, because they were sent to the server with the click.
- Use the field's name. The token must have the field's name, for example
[Email]for theEmailfield. Tokens that don't match a field don't change anything in the form.
Examples
To understand how to use the below examples, please see Running Examples.
1. Refresh the form after setting values
Put this action after the actions that set field values, for example a Create/Update Tokens that sets FullName to [FirstName] [LastName]. The form then shows the new FullName value without a page reload.
{
"Title": "Update Form Data (AJAX)",
"ActionType": "UpdateForm",
"Description": "Show the new values in the form",
"Parameters": {}
