Actions,Listings
The Datasource actions work with the data source behind a Listing. You add them to the Listing's buttons to add, view, edit and delete entries, to edit rows right in the table, to show an item's details in a panel, and to reload the data. Most of them use settings from the Listing's data source, such as its Add Url, Edit Url or delete query, so they need no other setup.
These actions are only available in Listings.
Choosing an action
| Action | What it does | Use it to |
|---|---|---|
| Datasource Add | Opens the data source's Add Url, in the same tab or in a popup. | Add an Add button above the Listing that opens a form for a new record. |
| Datasource View | Opens the data source's View Url for an item, in the same tab or in a popup. | Add a View button that opens a details page for the record. |
| Datasource Edit | Opens the data source's Edit Url for an item, in the same tab or in a popup. | Add an Edit button that opens the record's edit form. |
| Datasource Delete | Deletes an item from the data source, then refreshes the Listing. | Add a Delete button to each row, or delete the selected rows. |
| Datasource Inline Add | Adds an empty row to the Listing that users fill in and save in the table. | Add simple records, such as categories or lookup values, without a form. |
| Datasource Inline Edit | Turns rows into editable fields and saves the changes to the data source. | Let users correct a status or quantity without leaving the Listing. |
| Detail View | Shows an item's fields in a panel, built automatically. | Show all of a record's details, with its item buttons, without writing HTML. |
| Custom Detail View | Shows an item's details in a panel, using an HTML template you write. | Show a formatted summary, such as a contact card. |
| Datasource Refresh | Reloads the Listing's data and keeps the current page, search, filters and sorting. | Show new values after a button changes the data with Run SQL Query. |
| Get Data Query | Saves the data source's query and the user's filters in tokens. | Log the query a Listing runs, or save the filters a user applied. |
Which button?
The actions differ in whether they need an item:
- Root buttons. Datasource Add and Datasource Inline Add don't need an item, so put them in a root button's
Actionslist. - Item buttons. Datasource View, Datasource Edit, Detail View and Custom Detail View work on the clicked item. In a root button there's no item, and in a
Per Item Actionslist the browser ignores their result. - Either. Datasource Delete works on an item button, or in a root button's
Per Item Actionsto delete the selected rows. Then add Datasource Refresh to the button'sFinal Actions. Datasource Inline Edit edits one row from an item button, or every row on the page from a root button.
The Add Item, View Item, Edit Item, Delete Item and Bulk Delete special buttons already use these actions.
It depends on the data source
What each action does comes from the Listing's data source settings. See Listings Datasources.
- URLs. The Add Url, View Url and Edit Url are set on the Database Table, SQL Advanced Query and SQL Select data sources. If the URL is empty, the action shows an error.
- Saving and deleting. Database Table builds the SQL from the table and its ID Column. SQL Select and SQL Advanced Query run the insert, update or delete query you set on the data source. If that query is empty, nothing is saved.
- Server Request (JSON). This data source doesn't save or delete anything. Do the insert or update yourself in the inline actions' On Save list. Delete isn't supported.
- Get Data Query. Only the Database Table filtered query can be run as SQL. Other data sources return different text, or empty tokens.
Final actions
Every action in this group except Get Data Query returns a result to the browser, so actions placed after it on the same button don't run. Put any preparation, such as loading extra data, before it. For the inline actions, put follow-up logic in On Save (and On Complete for Inline Edit).
Closing a popup opened by Datasource Add or Datasource Edit doesn't refresh the Listing. It shows the changes after it reloads.
For actions that refresh or filter a different Listing module, or open a form in a popup, see UI Actions. For running your own SQL, see Data.
