Actions,Forms,Constant Contact account
The Constant Contact add-on adds a user to a Constant Contact email list from a form, or removes them from it. It adds two actions to the Email group, Subscribe To Constant Contact and Unsubscribe from Constant Contact, and three form templates that use them.
The actions use Constant Contact's old V2 API (api.constantcontact.com/v2). Constant Contact no longer issues V2 API keys and doesn't develop the V2 API any more. It recommends the V3 API, which this add-on doesn't support. You can only use these actions if you already have a V2 API key and access token, and they stop working when Constant Contact turns off the V2 API. For new work, call the V3 API with the Server Request action instead.
This add-on is the ActionForm.ConstantContact package, with product code CONSTANTC. It's installed separately. The actions don't check the license when they run. If you don't see the two actions in the Email group of the action list, the add-on isn't installed.
What it adds
| Action | What it does | Use it to |
|---|---|---|
| Subscribe To Constant Contact | Adds the email address from a form field to a Constant Contact list, with the name, address, phone and custom fields you map. If the contact already exists, it's updated and the list is added to its lists. | Add a newsletter sign-up to a form. |
| Unsubscribe from Constant Contact | Removes the email address from a form field from one Constant Contact list. The contact and its other lists are kept. In 1.28 it always fails with The email address is invalid. | Add an unsubscribe form for one list. |
The actions have no output tokens. They work in forms.
The add-on also adds three form templates, two to subscribe (a short one and a full profile) and one to unsubscribe. They're forms with the fields and the button already set up. Fill in your API key, token and list name in the action on the button before you use them.
What you need
Both actions take the same connection details:
- API Key. The V2 API key of your Constant Contact developer account.
- Token. The V2 access token for your Constant Contact account. It's sent as a bearer token.
- List Name. The name of the list, exactly as it appears in Constant Contact, including capitals.
If any of them is empty, the actions fail with This service is not configured properly.
Considerations
- Keys in plain text. The API key and token aren't tokenized, so you type them into the action and they're saved with the form. Anyone who can edit the form can read them.
- API key in the URL. The API key is sent in the query string of every request, so it can show up in proxy and web server logs, and in the details of failed requests.
- Use it in a form. Subscribe reads the mapped values from the form, so it fails outside a form submit. Unsubscribe reads the address from a form field.
- Consent. Subscribe adds whatever address is in the field. Make sure your form asks for consent as your local email laws require.
To send email from your own server, see the Email actions. For another email marketing service, see the Mailchimp add-on.
