The QR Code add-on creates QR code images from any text, such as a URL. It saves the image as a PNG in a portal folder and can return its URLs, path and Base64 content in tokens, so you can show it on a page or put it in a PDF or email. You can set the colors and add an icon, such as your logo, in the middle. It only creates images. It can't read or scan codes.

This add-on is the PlantAnApp.Qr package. It's installed separately and needs the PAAQR feature package in your license. If it isn't licensed, the action fails with a not-licensed error. If you don't see the action, the add-on isn't installed.

Choosing an action​

For barcodes that retail or warehouse scanners read, such as EAN-13 or Code 128, use the Barcode Generator add-on. It also has a form field that scans QR codes with the user's camera.

Using the image​

  • Show it on a page. Use [<TokenName>:RelativeUrl] in an <img> tag.
  • Embed it in an email or PDF. Use [<TokenName>:Base64]. It has no data: prefix, so add data:image/png;base64, yourself. You can also use the URL in Generate PDF.
  • Create the folder first. The action fails if the folder is missing. Use Get or Create Folder first if needed.
  • Use unique file names. .png is added for you. A file with the same name is overwritten, so include something unique, such as an ID.

Things to know​

  • Keep the text short. A QR code holds a limited amount of data. Encode a link to a page instead of the full content.
  • Icons cover part of the code. When you add one, choose the Highest error correction level and a small icon, and test the result with a few phones.
  • Keep enough contrast. Scanners expect a dark code on a light background.
  • Automation jobs. The output tokens are built from the current page request. In workflows and scheduled jobs, leave Output Token Name empty, or the action fails.
