Email OAuth

Audience: Low-code Engineers, System/Security Administrators

Skill Prerequisites: Actions, Tokens, DNN host settings

The Email OAuth add-on sends email through the site's DNN mail provider instead of connecting to an SMTP server directly. When the site uses a mail provider that signs in with OAuth, for example for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, your applications can send email through it.

The add-on adds one action, Send Email (OAuth Compatible). It doesn't add connector types, OAuth settings or token handling of its own. The OAuth sign-in is done by the mail provider that's set up for the site.

note

This add-on is the PlantAnApp.EmailOAuth package, with product code EMOAUTH. It's installed separately and needs DNN 9.13 or later. The action doesn't check the license when it runs. If you don't see Send Email (OAuth Compatible) in the Email group of the action list, the add-on isn't installed.

What it adds

ActionWhat it doesUse it to
Send Email (OAuth Compatible)Sends an email, with optional attachments, through the site's DNN mail provider. It's set up like Send Email.Send notifications and confirmations on a site whose mail server requires OAuth sign-in.

Setting up

  1. Set up the site's mail provider in the DNN host settings so that it can send email through your mail service. For OAuth, this includes registering an app with Microsoft or Google and giving the provider its details. Follow the documentation of the mail provider you use. The add-on doesn't do any of this for you.
  2. Check that the site can send email through the provider before you rely on it in your applications.
  3. In your application, use Send Email (OAuth Compatible) instead of Send Email.

If the mail provider fails, the action fails with DNN Mail.SendMail failed: followed by the provider's message.

Differences from Send Email

Send Email (OAuth Compatible) always uses the site's mail provider, so a few Send Email features aren't available:

  • Connector. The Connector field is shown, but it's ignored.
  • Headers. Custom headers aren't sent.
  • Display names. Names such as Support <support@mydomain.com> are removed, and only the address is sent.
  • One body. HTML emails don't get a plain-text version.

Formats, DNN email templates, attachments, Send mail to all users and error handling work the same way. For the full comparison, see What's different from Send Email.

For SMTP servers that accept a username and password, use Send Email and the core Email actions. To receive email, see Email Sync.
