Reindex Search Boost Content

Audience: Low-code Engineers

Skill Prerequisites: Actions, Automation, Search

Rebuilds the index of a search behavior from an Automation job. The behavior's index is cleared, then all its content sources are read again, such as pages, files, URLs and database indexing rules.

It's an older, simpler way to do what Index Behavior does with Scope set to Full Reindex and Bypass Queue unchecked. The action only starts the work. It returns right away, and the content is indexed in the background.

note

This action is only available in Automation jobs. It requires the Search feature (Standard) to be licensed, and the action picker marks it when the feature isn't licensed. The action itself doesn't check the license. See Considerations.

Typical Use Cases

  • Rebuild a behavior's index on a schedule, for example every night
  • Rebuild the index after a large import that ran in the same Automation job

Don't use it to

  • Index only what changed. Use Index Behavior with Incremental.
  • Rebuild the index from a form, a listing or a workflow. Use Index Behavior, which also works there.
  • Index a single database indexing rule. Use Index Rule.
  • Delete some records from the index. Use Remove Records.
Action NameDescription
Index BehaviorIndexes or rebuilds a behavior, with more options. Prefer it for new work.
Index RuleIndexes one database indexing rule right away.
Remove RecordsDeletes records from a behavior's index.
Perform SearchSearches a behavior's index.

Compared with Index Behavior

Reindex Search Boost ContentIndex Behavior
Where it's availableAutomation jobs onlyForms, listings, workflows, Automation jobs and more
What it doesAlways a full reindexIncremental or Full Reindex
QueueAlways waits its turn on the indexing serverCan start right away with Bypass Queue
License checkNone when it runsFails if Search isn't licensed
Unknown Behavior IDFails with a generic errorFails with a parameter error

What happens when it runs

The behavior is marked for reindexing. Within a second or so, the indexing server stops any indexing of the behavior, clears its index, then reads all content sources. The content is then written to the index in batches, every few seconds. You can follow the progress in the Search Dashboard Tab.

It also works when the behavior's Disable Content Querying setting is on.

Considerations

  • The index is empty for a while. Until indexing finishes, searches return few or no results. Schedule the job outside working hours.
  • Check the license. If Search isn't licensed, the action doesn't fail, but the index is still cleared and the content isn't read again. An error that the feature is unlicensed is written to the log.
  • Validate the Behavior. A missing, non-numeric or unknown value makes the action fail with a generic error.
  • Errors during indexing are written to the log, not returned by the action.
  • Web farms. Indexing runs on the master server. See the server information in the Search Dashboard Tab.

Examples

tip

To understand how to use the below examples, please see Running Examples.

1. Rebuild the index every night

In a scheduled Automation job, this action rebuilds the index of behavior 1.
