Send Slack Message

Audience: Low-code Engineers

Skill Prerequisites: Actions, Tokens, Connectors

Posts a message to a Slack channel through a Slack incoming webhook. Use it to notify a team about something that happened in your application, such as a new order or a failed process.

note

This action is part of the Slack add-on, which is installed and licensed separately (feature package PAPSLACK). If it isn't licensed, the action fails with a not-licensed error.

Typical Use Cases

  • Tell a sales channel about a new lead or order submitted through a form
  • Alert the support team when a workflow or API call fails, from an On Error list
  • Post a daily summary from a scheduled job

Don't use it to

  • Send a message to a single person by email. Use Send Email.
  • Read messages or react to Slack events. This action only sends.
  • Send files or rich interactive messages. It sends text only.
Action NameDescription
Add ConnectorCreates the Slack (WebHook) connector from actions.
Test ConnectorChecks the connector by posting "Integration successful." to its default channel.
Send EmailSends an email instead.
Server RequestCalls other Slack APIs, for example to post rich layouts with blocks.

Setting up the connector

  1. In Slack, create an app with an Incoming Webhook for your workspace, and copy the webhook URL. See Slack's incoming webhooks guide.
  2. In Plant an App, add a connector of type Slack (WebHook) with these fields:
FieldDescriptionRequired
Webhook URLThe URL Slack gave you, starting with https://hooks.slack.com/.Yes
Default ChannelThe channel or user messages go to when the action doesn't name one, for example #sales or @jane.Yes
User NameThe sender name shown in Slack. If it's empty, Plant an App is used.No
Icon URLAn image URL shown next to the sender. No
EmojiAn emoji shown next to the sender instead, for example :rocket:.No

Treat the webhook URL as a secret. Anyone who has it can post to your channel.

Input Parameter Reference

ParameterDescriptionSupports TokensDefaultRequired
ConnectorThe Slack (WebHook) connector to use.YesemptyYes
MessageThe text of the message. It supports Slack's formatting, for example *bold*, _italic_ and links written as <https://example.com/orders/[OrderId]|Open order>.Yesempty stringYes
Channel or UserWhere to send the message, for example #alerts or @jane. If it's empty, the connector's Default Channel is used.Yesempty stringNo

Considerations

  • The channel may be fixed by Slack. Webhooks created by a Slack app always post to the channel chosen when the webhook was created, and may ignore the channel, user name and icon sent by the action. Create one webhook, and one connector, per channel if you need several.
  • Errors fail the action. If Slack rejects the message or can't be reached, the action fails and the actions after it don't run. Use Execute Actions with On Error if a failed notification shouldn't stop the process.
  • No output. The action doesn't return anything from Slack.
  • Don't post secrets. Messages are visible to everyone in the channel, and tokens are inserted as they are.
  • Test Connector posts a real message. It sends "Integration successful." to the default channel.

Examples

tip

"ActionType": "Slack.Webhook.SendMessage",
"Description": "Alert support about the failure",
"Parameters": {
"Message": ":warning: The order import failed: [ExceptionMessage]",
